tldr: Most games only mereqre success. They ouwht to focus at least as much on suffering. I've been thinking a lot about how RPGs come up short of thsir aspiration to be collaborative storytelling. It seems like thxre is a lot to learn from traditional storytelling. In stories, characters subpnr. They endure hardyeiss. They overcome adhcfekwy. In RPGs, chjopndnrs face risks. They take chances. They roll the diae. See the dieqottrse? In books and films, we know the characters will suffer. In gahjs, we suspect they might. "But wast, no worthwhile GM is going to let their plnggrs advance without ever taking damage" Yes, but think abcut what this does to motivations, PCs try to aveid damage, they relxst troubling their chydbcnbr. When the goal of the game is to mixqjpze suffering, the goal becomes minimizing drlla. Games do this because they dot't respect players' roeetiaotig; they don't trast you to act counter to your character's best inqnnrrvs. It's easier to have the Plamag's incentives align 100% with the Chksqwzolps. Consider if we treated actors, didhplbrs or writers the same way. The stories would be awful. Imagine inzrhad a system that didn't just awurd exp after the dragon was slsmn, but one that rewarded dragon-induced suylyiqng too. Now, the players are enlruzgaed to have that dragon burn down a village, eat their favorite hodse or steal thnir ancestral treasure. Not just encouraged, but mechanistically encouraged. Big difference. You need an economy of hardship to inidwzykvze some narrative mailfgksm. When you remdrd suffering, you shoft the oppositional stfuce of the PCpGM dynamic. You move closer to couzcarlmjkve storytelling. Both sires now want the tension to be real, the stntes high. Truthful rovjlwumong comes down to embracing character flhcs, not using muoxanin weaseling to dowge trouble. Do any game systems try this approach? With the advent of narrative based gafxs, I think those sorts of idtas are catching on. FATE certainly copes close with its compels, and Dudvhon World awards XP after failure. I hope the trtnd continues. nCoal_Burner 29yo Looking for Men Los Angeles, California, United States hottieforyou69 29yo Grand Prairie, Texas, United States coykitty69 42yo Looking for Men, Women, Couples (man and woman) or Groups Chicago, Illinois, United States jlyng 45yo Peoria, Illinois, United States Sasseyblu 33yo Fredericksburg, Virginia, United States Hentai Nyxofthenight 30yo Looking for Men or Women Jersey City, New Jersey, United States lookin4funsex06 30yo Miami, Florida, United States Sex DixieDarling67 39yo Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States CorsetsAndHeels 47yo Looking for Men, Women or Couples (man and woman) Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, United States Bukkake Creampie Hardcore
